The Blob

THR reports producers Richard Saperstein (The Mist, Cell, Frequency) and Brian Witten (Chernobyl Diaries, Books of Blood, Creepshow) — who have spent “more than $418,000 developing” a remake of The Blob since “acquiring an option” for the franchise back in 2009 — have filed a lawsuit against the original 1958 film’s production company, Worldwide Entertainment Corporation. Stating their deal has expired and the film rights have reverted back to the company, Saperstein and Witten allege company president Judith Harris “orally agreed to an extension” on their contract “and then failed to put it in writing despite multiple emails and even a $50,000 offer.” According to the duo, the covid-19 outbreak has “prevented them from attempting to produce the picture” on schedule.

Secret Invasion

Deadline reports Christopher McDonald (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Happy Gilmore) has joined the cast of Secret Invasion in a currently undisclosed role.

What If?

Jeffrey Wright discussed his role as The Watcher in a recent interview with Disney’s D23 Magazine (via The Direct).

In the comics, he’s an observer – and then some. Here, in the first season, he starts off as an observer, but he gradually becomes more compelled by what he watches. There are infinite possibilities with this series within the MCU. I’m open to all of it. One thing I think we’re realizing with Marvel and Kevin Feige’s leadership is that these are broad, broad canvasses they’re painting on. I don’t even try to anticipate, so I’m just open to all of it – as The Watcher would be.

Monica Rambeau Scenes Were Cut From WandaVision and Here’s Why!

Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau in Wandavision

WandaVision writer Jac Schaeffer has been holding OUT!

On Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast with Schaeffer discusses why a specific scene from Monica Rambeau’s (Teyonah Parris) story had to be cut.

“My pitch was mapped to the stages of grief, it ended up being kind of a reductive thing,” said Schaeffer. “I don’t know if you know this or not, Teyonah, but [Monica] had a therapist in the base, the pop-up base. There were therapy scenes because we, in the [writers’] room, were very pro-therapy.”

WandaVision remained invested in exploring the effects of grieving and trauma. If you’ve watched the show, you know Monica Rambeau went through a lot to become the hero she is today, and Schaeffer was itching to give the audience access into her psyche with scenes of her speaking to a therapist. Unfortunately, it was deleted due to timing. Schaeffer states, “We were like, ‘Well, we’ve got to have a therapist,’ and then realized that there’s not a lot of time in the pop-up [S.W.O.R.D.] base [outside Westview] for Monica to be stepping into her sessions at all.”

Well, that sucks! I hope they release the scene because I would like to know what’s going on inside Monica’s head. It might give us some perspective of what’s to come when Monica, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) come together in the film The Marvels set to release in 2022.

What do you think? Should they release that deleted scene? Let us know!

Here’s How the ESPN+ NBA Marvel Game Should Go

Illustration for article titled Here's How the ESPN+ NBA Marvel Game Should Go

Photo: Mike Windle (Getty Images)

In a truly confounding mash-up of what I previously understood to be two completely unrelated things, ESPN has announced its “first-ever Marvel-inspired alternate NBA telecast.” Wait, what?

ESPN described the event as a “Marvel-inspired alternate presentation” for an upcoming Golden State Warriors versus New Orleans Pelicans game slated for May 3 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The event will center on a Marvel storyline with 3D characters and animations and will feature characters Iron Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Captain America, Black Widow, and Doctor Strange. Three players from each team, including Warriors Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, will have active roles in the event and will win “Marvel Hero points” for their performance in the game.

“After a narrow victory over an invading alien army, the Avengers receive an ominous threat from the enemy who vows to return in greater numbers and force. The Black Panther and Iron Man quickly realize they will need more help and form a plan to expand their ranks to fight this impending threat,” the press release reads. “Recognizing the superior physical abilities, agility, and tenacity of Earth’s greatest athletes, the Avengers will hold a series of contests where the winners earn the right to train and fight alongside them as Marvel’s Champions! The Avengers will begin their recruitment with the NBA elite and observe the battle between the Warriors and the Pelicans, focusing on three star players from each team.”

The winning team will evidently be named Marvel’s first Champion. Points can be both won and deducted based on performance during the event, which is certainly one idea. We have some notes.

Here’s how this should go: First of all, Thanos’ head will serve as the ball. At an unspecified time during any point in the IRL game, half of the players will disappear. Scratch that—half of the entire arena will disappear. In the wake of missing players and bystanders, signs for the poorly constructed campaign to #BringBackTonyStarktoLife will crop up everywhere. Chaos will ensue. Just spitballing here but surely if we want to give the people the true Marvel experience, we can do better than 3D visuals and cartoons, can we not?

The event will stream on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+, and ESPN Deportes. ESPN, please feel free to contact us here at Gizmodo dot com if you’d like some feedback.

Marvel’s Getting in on That Cat Manga Business Now

I mean, where Junji Ito goes, publishers should follow, right?

Marvel and Viz Media have announced a new partnership to bring two manga volumes to print, one entirely new to the West and the other releasing for the first time physically. The latter is mangaka Nao Fuji’s Marvel Meow, which originally debuted on Marvel Comics’ official Instagram, but will now be released as a special collection charting the adventures of your feline friend and mine, Captain Marvel’s Flerken Chewie (a.k.a. Goose for those familiar with their MCU counterpart). The series follows Chewie’s escapades as (in true kitty style) no one in the Marvel Universe, hero or villain alike, can stop themselves from simultaneously falling in love with, and being at the mercy of, Chewie’s whims.

Viz and Marvel will follow that up with the first English translation of Sanshirou Kasama and Hikaru Uesugi’s Deadpool: Samurai Shonen Jump digital series. It’s a spin-out of a one-shot last year that, as the title implies, sees the Merc with a Mouth flung through time to feudal Japan, forcing him to adapt and become a wandering ronin.

Marvel Meow will release in fall 2021, with Deadpool: Samurai following it sometime next year.

Marvel’s Secret Invasion Is Being Invaded by Oscar Winner Olivia Colman

Olivia Colman is joining the MCU.

Olivia Colman is joining the MCU.
Photo: Amazon

How big is Marvel Studios these days? It can get Oscar-winning actors to appear not just in its movies, but on its streaming shows. Case in point: Olivia Colman, who won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2019, is joining up with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn for Secret Invasion, one of several upcoming Disney+ Marvel shows.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and though there’s no word on who Colman will be playing, “an infiltration of Skrulls on Earth figures into the proceedings” of the show, which is unsurprising since it shares a name with the iconic comics event where, well, exactly that happens. We don’t know for sure, but it’s likely that Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion picks up after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home where Nick Fury (Jackson) was revealed to be out in space on a Skrull ship while Talos (Mendelsohn) was back on Earth, pretending to be Fury. All of which was set up in Captain Marvel, and likewise there’s no word on how, or if, the show will impact the sequel to that movie, which is set for release November 2022.

Colman won that 2019 Oscar for The Favourite—and, looking across her career, it’s so perfect that she won for that. In that role, she was required to be funny and dark and intense all rolled into one, which is basically everything she, herself, can do as an actress. Many of us probably remember her first from her small, funny role as one of the police officers in Hot Fuzz. More recently, she’s been stunning and stoic as Queen Elizabeth in The Crown. But she also stood toe-to-toe with new Indiana Jones cast member Phoebe Waller-Bridge for two seasons of the amazing Fleabag and got another Oscar nomination this year for her movie with with Odin himself, Anthony Hopkins, in The Father. She’s a powerhouse of talent that will be a formidable friend (or foe) to Fury and his crew.

Secret Invasion does not yet have a release date but One Night in Miami star Kingsley Ben-Adir is also on board, and Mr. Robot’s Kyle Bradstreet is showrunning.

An Epic Timeline of the Rock Willing DC’s Black Adam Into Existence

Concept art from Black Adam.

Concept art from Black Adam.
Image: Warner Bros.

In just a few weeks, Dwayne Johnson will finally roll cameras on his DC movie, Black Adam. That statement seems almost unbelievable—because if you can believe it, the actor and the role have been inseparable for over a decade. In that time, Johnson has taken great pleasure in teasing fans about what’s to come and reiterating his unrelenting passion to play the anti-hero. But even he certainly didn’t realize just how long it would take.

Over the years, much has changed about what fans thought Johnson’s role as Black Adam would be, when the film was supposed to come out, and much more. So let’s take a stroll down memory lane, DC-style.

November 26, 2007: At least on io9, this was the first time the site wrote about Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. The Rock, potentially playing Black Adam. At the time though, there seemed to still be a chance he’d play the hero Shazam instead. Nothing was set in stone, though. It was just talk.

September 3, 2014: Yes, 2014. That’s not a typo. That was when Johnson confirmed that he would be playing Black Adam in a DC movie.

October 15, 2014: Warner Bros. announces the future of the DC universe. Zack Snyder is making two Justice League movies. Ezra Miller is the Flash and the Rock will play Black Adam in Shazam, scheduled for release in 2019.

May 16, 2017: In an interview, Johnson teases some kind of cameo or surprise well before a Shazam or Black Adam movie. As far as we can tell, that plan changed.

January 19, 2017: Black Adam is getting his own movie. News breaks that before we see the character face-off with Shazam, as originally expected, Johnson will star in his own origin story of sorts. The two will potentially showdown after that.

February 21, 2017: On social media, Johnson gives an impassioned speech about why Black Adam, long considered a villain, isn’t necessarily just that.

April 11, 2018: Johnson says in an interview he thinks the film will start shooting in 2019.

March 23, 2019: Our review of Shazam is published. This was the movie many fans expected Black Adam to appear in, but he does not. The movie is good, though, and it’s a hit—only adding more fuel to a possible showdown in the future.

July 1, 2019: A deleted scene from Shazam seems to hint at Black Adam’s arrival.

July 7, 2019: Black Adam has its director. After what we can only assume was a good experience together on Disney’s Jungle Cruise, Johnson and his team hire Jaume Collet-Serra to direct the DC comic book film.

November 14, 2019: Black Adam has a release date! December 22, 2021. We can’t wait. (Actually, we can and we will.)

November 17, 2019: The film’s director of photography is announced, Larry Sher. The crew is starting to come together.

April 14, 2020: As the covid-19 pandemic just starts to hit Hollywood hard, Johnson guesses he might start filming in August or September 2020, still aiming at that 2021 release date. That doesn’t end up happening.

July 16, 2020: One of the biggest pieces of casting yet happens as Noah Centineo joins the film as Atom Smasher.

August 22, 2020: Arguably the biggest day in Black Adam history. During DC Fandome, Johnson reveals the film will feature the Justice Society of America. We also get to see some concept art and the official logo for the first time.

September 25, 2020: Aldis Hodge will be playing classic DC character Hawkman!

October 6, 2020: Black Adam is moved off Warner Bros.’ release schedule due to covid-19 rescheduling. To date, it still does not have a new release date.

October 14, 2020: The cast expands with Chicago Fire’s Sarah Shahi playing an undisclosed role.

December 15, 2020: More casting as Quintessa Swindell joins the film as Maxine “Cyclone” Hunkell, the granddaughter of the original Red Tornado.

March 21, 2021: Johnson posts the first page of his script on Instagram, revealing the tone he and the DC team are going for and that filming begins in a few short weeks. After all that time, it’s finally here. Well, give or take a few more months for the thing to actually get made.

Whenever We Actually See No Time to Die, Lashana Lynch Really Is the New 007

Hello, 007.

Hello, 007.
Image: MGM

Considering the movie was meant to come out approximately 300 years ago in the Astral Era known by historians as “earlier this year,” we’ve known that Lashana Lynch’s No Time to Die character was a 00—and the source of many a rumor about whether or not she’d be the next Bond. We’re still waiting on the movie’s release, but at least we now know she is the new Bond. Sort of.

No Time to Die’s ongoing pre-marketing campaign continued apace this week with Lynch chatting to Harpers Bazaar about her role as Nomi in the movie, and confirmed something we’ve long speculated about the MI6 agent but couldn’t be quite be clear on: She is in indeed the new 007 when we meet her in the movie. The magazine writes, “An instinctual and deliberate artist, she is focused on the true story of the Black woman, on communicating her honestly and with purpose. We saw this in her nuanced, solid performance as the single mother and pilot Maria Rambeau in last year’s Captain Marvel, in which she successfully stretched the bounds of what a hero is meant to be, and we will see it again in her outing as the first ever female 007.”

Considering the movie opens with Bond in retirement, it’s no surprise that there’s a new 007 around (Harpers writes more specifically, “she stars as Nomi, the secret agent who inherits the 007 title while Bond himself is in exile.”). It doesn’t necessarily mean that Nomi could still be holding the moniker by the end of the film—Bond could reclaim it in part, before giving it up again for whoever will lead the franchise after Daniel Craig finally hangs up his license to kill. We don’t know. But we know at least the mere possibility that a black woman being referred to in this movie as “007” has already seen Lynch face abuse.

“I am one Black woman–if it were another Black woman cast in the role, it would have been the same conversation, she would have got the same attacks, the same abuse,” Lynch told Harpers. “I just have to remind myself that the conversation is happening and that I’m a part of something that will be very, very revolutionary.”

Although Bond producers have seemingly pushed back on the idea of a female Bond for now, at least, let’s hope Nomi is the first step in choosing a new 007 that breaks boundaries that have been in place since the earliest days of the franchise.

No Time to Die is currently expected to release on April 2, 2021. Maybe. God, who knows at this point?
